Alex Lawrence

Hi, I’m Alex Lawrence, the founder of Startup Flavor. I work at Weber State University. Before that, I was an entrepreneur. I am a teacher, writer, and tech enthusiast, with other interests as well. I bet I’m like many of you; the kid who started out with the lemonade stand and then went on to start larger companies. I’d like to think I’m known as a passionate, energetic, fiery competitor that is enthusiastic about work, helping others and seeing people and processes get better. At least that is how I’d describe myself (for the most part).

I’ve been launching and growing successful companies for more than 20 years. I’m always trying to learn more but have had some good experiences in business strategy, sales, Internet marketing, social media, venture and debt capital, mobile and web application development, franchising, mergers and acquisitions, commercial real estate, and operations.

Prior to coming to Weber State, my most recent partnership, Lendio, ranked #34 on the Inc. 500 list a few years back. You can read about the exciting things going on with Lendio in an article on TechCrunch.

As I mentioned, I am currently working at Weber State University. I’m a full time faculty member in the Professional Sales Program (Internet Sales, Internet Tools and Sales Ethics) at the College of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology (EAST). If you are at or near WSU, consider taking one of my classes. They are available in person and online via the Professional Sales Program. I teach real-world strategies that are based on cutting edge, proven approaches that are actually used in business today. I pride myself on providing information from current experts and teaching topics and content that students can use today. I use guest speakers and topical experts to come in and share what they are doing right now in the real world of business.

Prior to being a full time faculty member, I was the Vice Provost: Innovation and Economic Development for WSU. I worked with faculty, staff, students and business members in the community to help start and grow businesses. I also served as the Executive Director of the Weber State University Research Foundation (WSURF), a wholly owned WSU entity that fosters and supports on campus innovation and commercialization with students, faculty and the surrounding business community. Finally, I still enjoy being Chairman of Startup Ogden, an exciting partnership between Ogden City and Weber State that help area entrepreneurs create and grow strong and exciting businesses (read more about it here). I was responsible for a variety of teams that work together, including Technology Commercialization (TCO), Contracts (OSP), Small Business (SBDC), Innovation (UCAID) and State of Utah initiatives (USTAR).

I’ve been a contributor on Entrepreneurship for Forbes Magazine. I have also written a regular column for Utah Business Magazine. I’ve been featured on TechCrunch, 40 under 40 Top Entrepreneurs, V100 Top 100 Technology Entrepreneurs, E-50 Top 50 Social Entrepreneurs, WSU Entrepreneur Alumni of the Year, and more. I was on the advisory board for the Women Tech Council , The NorthFront Entrepreneur Alliance , the WSU Entrepreneur Association, and I’m a Trustee for Launchup.org. I’ve been on the local NBC affiliate, KSL, for 100+ episodes as their “tech expert” — it’s a fun weekly segment on Wednesdays at 12:35pm MST. Tune in if you happen to be near a television in the middle of the afternoon 🙂

I’m down to my final efforts as a PhD student at Oklahoma State University. I hope to defend my dissertation and graduate before 2016 is over. I had my dissertation proposal approved earlier this year and have been working hard to finalize.

I’ve been married for 16 years and no one makes life more enjoyable than my wife and daughters. My family and I live a quiet life in the mountains of Utah, where we enjoy golf, fly fishing and other outdoor activities like swimming and hiking. When I’m not having fun with my family, I’d love to be playing golf or messing around with the latest tech gadgets. You might see me getting a speeding ticket now and again as well.

If you’d like to connect with me+ on various social networks, you’ll find me on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+. The easiest way to catch me though is either to send me a tweet @_AlexLawrence or shoot me an email.

Thanks for reading. I hope to connect with you sometime.

-Alex
